#openttdcoop, IRC, rude behaviour, a banlist and 9 good reasons
Hello Coop,
a few words from my side to all of you there outside – due to some recent observations. Please do not mistake me – everyone of you is welcome, without any exception. We are a community of cooperative players – everyone who visits us in our channel may have noticed that. We are a bunch of nice guys who want to complete games in close collaboration. Therefore, helping others in the game is self-evident for experienced players as well as helping on technical issues is. You will always find a helping hand or tutoring voice in our players, especially our members.
On the other hand, it is not only polite but also a sign of respect to read yourself through some 30-50 lines on the wiki to know what this all is about. You want the pass for our Sandbox Server? Its on the wiki. You want information about our GRF-package? Its on the wiki! Any questions remaining? Consult the wiki!
Today, I banned the first player from our servers. After some 1.5 years of beeing around I didn’t think this would ever happen. I’m writing this blogpost for you so you may notice why you are not banned by now. Et voila: 9 good reasons why you are not banned by now:
- You didn’t use the shift-button excessively on IRC
- You have a nickname which identifies you for your teammates
- You talk about what you have in your mind
- You joined as a spectator in your first game and just observed others at playing to understand what and how they are doing
- You can read
- You want to read if others suggest you to
- You click links to pages which were posted to you and may be important for you
- You respond to questions and advises ingame
- You don’t flood IRC because the world around you is all evil and try to help you
Thats all for tonight, don’t get banned out there!
To sumarise all the reasons: you didn’t act like a 12 year old.
Most of us know what happened tonight, most of them, like me, weren’t around from the start. I was around from just after he began whining about Nightlies and NewGRFs. I’m starting to feel quite mixed about this right now, I’m quite happy that I know what he did, OTOH I’m quite sad to have experienced this all in a community where everyone is nice to each other.
The main problem tonight was that the guy didn’t want to listen to what we were saying to him, we told him numerous times where to get the GRFs, but he refused to click our links, then he started whining about the password and acting like an emo for about an hour or so. The last thing thing that made him being banned is that someone screwed up the goods drop in the sandbox, we weren’t sure if it was him but ATM it seemed most likely as there were mostly some guys around that have been around for at least 3 weeks and 2 other guys that have been around for about a week.
I hope that this wont ever happen again, and I also hope that the people that are around now and have taken part as either spectator or as active speaker will remember this and don’t let it come this far again and this will certainly be used as a learning experience for us all.
